eBook Formats

MetaPlume eBooks are available in the following formats:

Amazon Kindle format (.mobi)

eBooks can be downloaded in .mobi format for Kindle from Amazon. A .mobi formatted eBook can be downloaded to various mobile devices such as iPad, iPhone, smartphones, tablets and PCs and then read using a Kindle app. Apps can be downloaded free from the Amazon website.

ePub

The ePub format is available from Smashwords and from Lulu. Most eReaders and apps support ePub files. ePub is the most recommended format for the following devices:

  • Barnes & Noble NOOK
  • Apple iPad
  • Sony Reader Touch Edition
  • Apple iPhone
  • iPod Touch
  • Adobe Digital Editions
  • Kobo eReader
  • Sony Reader Pocket Edition
  • iRiver Touch eReader
  • Adobe Digital Editions (software that can be used on Windows PCs and Apple computers)
  • Android tablets and smartphones using apps for eBooks such as Aldiko Reader, FBReader, Calibre, Cool Reader, Adobe Digital Edition (etc)

PDF

PDF is available from Smashwords and from Lulu. Most ePub-compatible eReaders also support PDF. These files are better suited for large screens. PDF is a visual format, not a text-based format, so there can be problems when you zoom in. PDF files can be read on:

  • Computer and laptops
  • Barnes & Noble NOOK
  • Apple iPad
  • Apple iPhone
  • Sony Readers
  • Kindle DX
  • Kindle 3
  • Android tablets and smartphones using apps for eBooks such as Aldiko Reader, FBReader, Calibre, Cool Reader, Adobe Digital Edition (etc)

HTML

HTML is available from Smashwords. HTML files are good for online reading in a browser. While no hardware eReader specifically supports HTML, any computer device that supports a web browser can display HTML-based eBooks. This is the best option for reading on a PC or laptop.

Word

Word files can be read on any computer that supports MS Office. You can download a Word version of MetaPlume eBooks from Smashwords.

Android Apps

Android apps are not eBooks but some developers and publishers release book-like material as Android apps as an extra distribution channel for their eBook titles. This is especially true for Children’s picture books and spiritual texts. Android apps are found on the Android Market, the app store run by Google. An eBook released in the app format is simply installed on an Android device like any other app and no eBook reading app is required. The format is technically an .apk file.
